Day of Remembrance of Defenders of the Fatherland in Abkhazia (14/08)

On August 14, Abkhazia celebrates the Day of Remembrance of Defenders of the Fatherland.

On August 14, 1992, troops of the State Council of Georgia entered Abkhazia. According to the official version of Tbilisi, troops were allegedly brought in to guard the railway on the Psou-Ingur section. The Supreme Council of Abkhazia regarded the actions of the State Council of Georgia as a «prepared occupation of the territory of sovereign Abkhazia».

After the entry of Georgian troops, an armed confrontation ensued, which escalated into the Georgian-Abkhaz war. The fighting lasted 413 days and ended in the defeat of the Georgian armed forces. Up to 12 thousand people took part in this war. More than 2,700 people became its victims, more than five thousand people were injured.

In all cities and regions of the Republic on this day, wreaths and flowers are laid at the monuments and graves of the population of Abkhazia who died in the Patriotic War of 1992—1993. Various commemorative and solemn events are also held.
