Apple Day in England (21/10)

On October 21 or the weekend closest to this date, England hosts Apple Day —, an annual event dedicated to apples, orchards and local attractions, which has been organized at the initiative of the Common Ground charity since 1990.

The organizers believe that Apple Day — is a celebration and demonstration of the diversity and richness of nature, as well as an incentive and sign that we ourselves are able to influence the changes taking place around us. The idea of the Day is that the — apple is a symbol of physical, cultural and genetic diversity that a person should not forget.

On Apple Day, you can see and try hundreds of different varieties of apples, and many of the available varieties are not sold in regular stores. Nursery staff offer to buy rare varieties of apple trees. Often the festival involves an apple identification service, which will determine what kind of apple you brought from the garden. And with the «apple doctor» you can discuss all the problems of the apple trees of your garden.

During the holiday, many apple and — drinks are offered, from apple pies, chutney fruit and vegetable seasoning and apple jam to apple juice and cider. Demonstrations of preparing hot and cold apple dishes are often held. Sometimes specialists give lessons in pruning and crown formation, as well as grafting apple trees. Various games, archery on apples and «-apple» stories are very popular at the festival.



The longest apple peel is included in the Guinness Book of Records. The world record reads: the record for the longest unbroken apple peel belongs to the American Kathy Walfer, who peeled the apple for 11 hours 30 minutes and received a peel 52 meters 51 centimeters long. The record was set on October 16, 1976 in New York.
