World Homeless Animals Day (20/08)

This date is considered not a holiday, but a reason to address the problem of homeless animals and tell the maximum number of people about their tragic fate.

Educational and charitable events are held around the world on this day. Volunteers hold concerts, competitions and auctions to help raise funds that are used to help homeless animals — primarily, of course, dogs and cats. Also this day — is a good chance to find an owner for a stray dog or cat.

One of the goals of Homeless Animal Day — is to awaken a conscious attitude towards their role among animal owners in order to prevent the ranks of stray cats and dogs from being replenished through the uncontrolled reproduction of pets. For the same purpose, some veterinary clinics on this day sterilize cats and dogs free of charge.

The problem that Homeless Animals Day draws attention to is really acute. In many Russian cities, the number of stray street dogs is in the tens of thousands of individuals. There is a catastrophic shortage of shelters throughout the country.

By the way, the first known dog shelter in the world appeared in Japan in 1695; it housed 50 thousand animals. The first law aimed at protecting animals from cruelty was passed in the UK. This happened in 1822. And the most favorable conditions for animals exist in Austria, where legislation prohibits, for example, trimming dogs’ tails and ears, using wild animals in circuses, selling puppies and kittens in pet store windows, and so on.
