Day of the State Flag of the Azerbaijan Republic (09/11)

Every year on November 9, Azerbaijan celebrates the important holiday — Day of the State Flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan (Azerbaijan). Azərbaycan Respublikasının Dövlət Bayrağı günü), officially established in 2009 by a corresponding decree of President Ilham Aliyev.

The date for the holiday was chosen due to the fact that on this day in 1918 the flag of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was approved. The republic existed only until 1920, but the history of the banner did not end there. When Azerbaijan seceded from the USSR in 1991, the country's government approved the flag as the state flag. A holiday in honor of him appeared on the calendar in 2009. Now November 9 in Azerbaijan is included in the list of non-working holidays.

The history of the flag of Azerbaijan dates back to the Ottoman Empire. The banner of this particular country was taken as the basis for the creation of state symbols. The flag of Azerbaijan is a banner with horizontal stripes of blue, red and green. In the center of the red stripe there is a white eight-pointed star and crescent.

The blue color symbolizes Turkic culture, red — progress and culture, and green — Muslim faith. The crescent is associated with Islam, and the eight-pointed star indicates that the country's name, in Arabic characters, has eight characters. According to another version, the star denotes eight branches of Turkic-speaking peoples.

The national flag means a lot to the Azerbaijani people. This is evidenced by the fact that the National Flag Square exists in Baku. Interestingly, this square was not renamed, but built on purpose. It was laid down on December 30, 2007, and officially opened on September 1, 2010.
