International Energy Saving Day (11/11)

November 11, at the initiative of the international environmental network «School Project for Application of Resources and Energy (SPARE), was declared International Day of Energy Saving.

The decision to establish the date was made in April 2008 at the international meeting of SPARE coordinators held in Kazakhstan. And already in November 2008, the world celebrated the first Energy Saving Day. This holiday received international status, since about 20 countries wished to take part in the project.

The main goal of the — holiday is to attract the attention of authorities and the public to the rational use of resources and the development of renewable energy sources. The problem of energy saving is much deeper than it might seem at first glance. Saving energy will reduce environmental pollution.

After all, energy is most often obtained by burning fossil fuels (coal, petroleum products, gas, peat). This causes damage to the environment: non-renewable natural resources are exhausted, and when burned, pollutants and greenhouse gases enter the air. Therefore, it is very important to use energy efficiently and strive to save it. And resource conservation measures — avoiding unnecessary purchases, reusing things, separate waste collection and recycling, composting and other — can help with this.

In addition, energy saving is economically beneficial. Measures to save energy resources are 2.5—3 times cheaper than producing and delivering the same amount of newly obtained energy to consumers. Moreover, the simplest and most basic energy saving measures are available to everyone and can be applied virtually everywhere in everyday life.

On International Energy Saving Day, all countries where this holiday is celebrated, including Russia, host events aimed at informing people about energy saving methods and existing renewable energy sources, and telling why it is important to save energy.

In many cities around the world, thematic conferences, exhibitions and events are held on this day, and lessons on the topic of energy saving are held in educational institutions.
