International Veterinarian's Day (30/04)

Every year on the last Saturday of April, many countries around the world celebrate International Veterinary Day, which was established by the World Veterinary Association (WVA) in 2000, to highlight various aspects of the work of veterinarians around the world and raise awareness about their contribution to improving animal health and welfare, as well as public health.

Today representatives of one of the most humane professions celebrate their holiday — veterinarians. Doctors who treat animals and birds, of course, will not receive words of gratitude from their four-legged and feathered patients, but there is no doubt: animals sometimes feel no less gratitude to their saviors than people.

Veterinary medicine, or simply veterinary medicine, — is a branch of science that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of animal diseases, as well as their injuries and disorders. France is considered the historical homeland of veterinary medicine. In the 18th century, the first school opened in Lyon for doctors who treat animals. It was founded by Louis XV to stop epidemics that were destroying large numbers of livestock.

However, veterinary skills, of course, originated much earlier than —, probably already when people got their first pets. Livestock has always been dear to peasants, and they tried to take care of it, protected it from all sorts of misfortunes, and treated it for diseases —, albeit not by scientific, but by folk methods.

The profession of veterinarian has always been respected. This is evidenced by the widespread love for the heroes of children's books — for animal treatment specialists: Dr. Aibolit in Russia and the countries of the former USSR and Dr. Dolittle in the English-speaking world.

Today, veterinarians work in veterinary clinics, veterinary stations, zoos, agricultural enterprises — in short, wherever there may be a need for medical care for animals. Their training in Russia is carried out by dozens of specialized educational institutions — secondary specialized and higher, — which indicates the popularity of the profession.

On International Veterinarian Day, all representatives of this specialty will definitely congratulate each other and also raise a glass to the health of their patients. And pet owners can please the aesculapians with words of gratitude.

By the way, Russia celebrates its Veterinary Worker Day on August 31, and in Ukraine Veterinary Medicine Workers Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of August.
