Day of National Unity of Tajikistan (27/06)

Every year on June 27, Tajikistan celebrates the national holiday – National Unity Day (taj). Ruzi Vahdati milli), also known as National Reconciliation Day. It was established by decree of President Emomali Rakhmonov in 1998 in honor of the end of the five-year civil war in Tajikistan.

During the civil war of 1992-1997, more than 100 thousand people died, millions of Tajiks became refugees. On June 27, 1997, in Moscow, the conflicting parties signed the Agreement «General Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and National Accord in Tajikistan», the guarantors of which, among other things, were Russia.

The main mechanism for implementing the «General Agreement» was the National Reconciliation Commission (NRC), which consisted of 26 members, 13 each from the Government of Tajikistan and the opposition. Thanks to the constructive interaction of the PNC with the Government of Tajikistan and in accordance with the provisions of the Agreement, prisoners of war and prisoners were released in accordance with the Mutual Forgiveness Act and the Amnesty Law; Reform of government structures was carried out with the appointment of opposition representatives to positions in executive government structures, including ministries, departments, local administrations, judicial and law enforcement agencies.

One of the most significant achievements of the activities of the PNC was the process of reintegration, disarmament and disbandment of armed opposition units consisting of about 7 thousand militants, as well as the simultaneous reform of the security forces of the Government of Tajikistan.

In accordance with the Law of the Republic of Tajikistan «On holidays» dated May 22, 1998 and in accordance with Article 83 of the Labor Legislation of the Republic of Tajikistan, as well as in accordance with the decree of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Day of National Reconciliation on June 27 was officially declared a holiday, a non-working day.

According to tradition, in honor of the holiday, ceremonial and entertainment events, concerts and mass celebrations are held throughout the Republic, the main idea of which is – strengthening peace in the country. Every year, ambassadors of foreign states and heads of international organizations accredited in the country, tens of thousands of ordinary Tajiks take part in them.
