Fjord day in Scandinavian countries (12/07)

The Fjordens Dag holiday lasts 3 days — from July 12 to 14. It is a celebration of the Scandinavian countries in which fjords are found in abundance. It has been held annually since 1991 to draw public attention to the state of coastal waters.

According to fjord dictionaries (from the Swedish fjard) —, these are shallow bays with low but steep and rocky shores. Fjords occur when the sea (lake) penetrates lowered areas of land.

Western Norway is especially famous for its fjords; each of the four provinces of Western Norway has its own unique natural masterpieces. In the northernmost province of Møre og Rumsdal there is the world famous Geyranger fjord, which is known for its powerful cascading waterfalls. Geirangerfjord is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In Denmark, Fjord Day began to be celebrated in 1991. But events dedicated to the Day are held in September.

During the celebration, environmental and local history conferences, screenings of films on environmental topics, exhibitions of painting and photography, musical evenings and concerts, and meetings with famous artists and cultural figures are held.

By the way, there are fjords not only in the Scandinavian countries, among the other most famous areas of their location are the — coasts of Chile, the South Island of New Zealand, North America and some Arctic islands.
