Day of Languages of the People of Kazakhstan (05/09)

By decree of the President of the Republic of January 20, 1998, in order to cultivate love and respect for the native language and one’s country and expand knowledge about languages and traditions of different nationalities, the country established the Day of Languages of the People of Kazakhstan holiday.

Initially, it was celebrated on the third Sunday of September, and in accordance with the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated October 31, 2017 №689 «On approval of the list of holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan», the celebration is set for September 5 – on the birthday of the Kazakh educator and scientist Akhmet Baitursynov (order. Akhmet Baitursynuly, 1872—1937).

The brilliant writer, teacher and linguist – Akhmet Baitursynov was one of the founders of Kazakh linguistics and literary criticism, developed the foundations of Kazakh linguistics, scientific terminology for defining grammar, and also reformed Kazakh writing based on Arabic script. In Kazakhstan he is revered as «Ult Ustazy» («Teacher of the Nation»).

The Day of Languages of the People of Kazakhstan is celebrated in the multinational republic. As part of the holiday, which symbolizes unity and harmony between peoples, concerts of masters of art, competitions for knowledge of languages, round tables and scientific conferences are held.

But in one day, of course, it is impossible to show the achievements in this area of dozens of peoples living on the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Therefore, weeks, decades, months, and language festivals are held in all regions.

The Ministry of Culture, together with the Assembly of Peoples of Kazakhstan, is holding a telethon dedicated to the problems of developing the state language. The same topic is discussed at scientific conferences.

Today, Uzbek, Uyghur, Tajik and Ukrainian national schools operate in Kazakhstan. Eleven national languages are studied in the country's educational institutions.

Language – well-being of the people, it contributes to the unification and unity of nations. Language – is a means of education and a support that connects people's relationships. Languages Day – is a sign of friendship, kinship and unity of all citizens of Kazakhstan, and friendship of peoples, mutual understanding and cooperation – is the main support for building the state.
