World Post Day (09/10)

World Post Day — is one of the international days celebrated within the United Nations system. Held annually on October 9 by decision of the 14th Congress of the Universal Postal Union on the day the union was created in 1874. And this day was proclaimed World Postal Day at the Congress of the World Postal Union, held in Tokyo in 1969.

On October 9, 1874, in Bjorn (Switzerland), representatives of 22 countries, including Russia, signed the Treaty of Bern, establishing the founding of the General Postal Union. In 1878, the union changed its name and became known as the Universal Postal Union (UPU). Today, the UPU consists of 192 countries. International Writing Week has been held around the world since October 9th.

According to UPU, international mail speaks 6,800 of its customers' languages and represents the world's longest physical mail delivery network. It is designed to ensure reliable, efficient and economical transportation of goods and the exchange of ideas. Mail transmits personal thoughts of friends over long distances. It helps firms of different sizes find clients and meet their needs.

Russia, which celebrates Russian Post Day on the second Sunday of July, — is one of the oldest members of this influential international organization. The federal postal network includes more than 38 thousand post offices and covers 99% of the country with its services.

Modern mail in many industrialized countries is actively working in the sector of logistics, postal banking services, catalog trade and direct mail, actively developing information technology, hybrid mail and e-commerce. Postal operators provide approximately 1.5 billion people worldwide with access to basic financial services (payments, remittances and savings).

The goal of today's World Post Day — is to promote the role of the postal sector in the daily lives of people and companies and its contribution to the socio-economic development of countries. Member States celebrating this Day are invited to develop programs of activities to increase awareness of the role and activities of their postal services among the public and the media at the national level.

Every year, events held as part of the Day (thematic exhibitions of rare and rare stamps and postcards, stamp drawing competitions, various educational events, open days, conferences and workshops, sports and entertainment events) are dedicated to a specific topic. Postal authorities in many countries take advantage of this opportunity to introduce or promote new postal products and services. And some postal departments also take the opportunity to hold award ceremonies for their most distinguished employees on this day.

Interestingly, the world's first postage stamps appeared in England in 1840, and the first postage stamps in Russia appeared in 1857.
