Day of the Constitution and State Flag of Turkmenistan (18/05)

On May 18, starting in 2018, Turkmenistan celebrates an important public holiday — Constitution and State Flag Day.

Initially, on May 18, the country celebrated only the Constitution Day of Turkmenistan, and the National Flag Day was celebrated on February 19, in honor of the fact that on this day in 1992 it was approved as the state symbol of the country. In 2017, the Mejlis of Turkmenistan decided to combine these two holidays.

On May 18, 1992, at the XIV meeting of the Supreme Council of Turkmenistan, the Constitution of an independent, sovereign state was adopted – Basic Law, which enshrines the unshakable legal foundations of an independent neutral Turkmen state. Turkmenistan's domestic and foreign policy is based on the priority of human value, the norms of national legislation and international law with regard to human and civil rights.

The Basic Law of Turkmenistan is focused on the development and deepening of broad international cooperation in the interests of global peace and progress.

The flag of Turkmenistan is a green banner with a vertical red-burgundy stripe, which depicts five national gels (sometimes gels — of Turkmen carpet ornaments, which serve as the state symbol of Turkmenistan).

Each of the gels is framed by a carpet ornament, the outer edge of which is aligned with the edges of the strip. At the bottom of the red-burgundy stripe there are two olive branches intersecting at the bases and directed upward in different directions, symbolizing the status of permanent neutrality of Turkmenistan. They form a single composition together with carpet gels. Each olive branch consists of ten leaves decreasing towards the ends, arranged in pairs, except for the lower and upper. The larger green section in the upper left corner shows a crescent moon and five five-pointed stars in white.

Traditionally, on May 18, various festive and ceremonial events are held everywhere. Also on this day, a ceremony is taking place in Ashgabat to officially raise the Main Flag of Turkmenistan, the flagpole of which is — 133 meters high.
