World Teacher's Day (05/10)

Every year on October 5, over a hundred countries celebrate World Teachers' Day. This is a professional holiday for all teachers, teachers and education workers — day, on which the role and merits of teachers in the process of quality education at all levels, as well as their invaluable contribution to the development of society, are celebrated.

The historical prerequisite for the establishment of Teacher's Day was the Special Intergovernmental Conference on the Status of Teachers held on October 5, 1966 in Paris. As a result, representatives of UNESCO and the International Labor Organization signed document «Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

In 1994, World Teachers' Day was celebrated on this day for the first time, and since then festive events have invariably taken place on October 5, although in some countries the holiday is celebrated on other days close to this date. The main thing is that the celebrations do not coincide with the autumn holidays in the northern hemisphere and with the spring holidays — in the southern hemisphere.

Since 1994, Russia has celebrated Teacher's Day according to the world calendar — on October 5. Previously, this professional holiday was celebrated on the first Sunday of October.

Today, on World Teacher's Day, which every year is dedicated to a specific topic, the UN invites parents and all citizens to think for a minute about how a good teacher, whose memory they have preserved, changed their lives.

In recent years, there has been a massive outflow of teachers, caused by factors such as budget cuts for civil service workers, lack of normal working conditions, impending retirement of older teachers, stress, exhaustion of physical and spiritual strength, and in many — countries a significant number of teachers who have died from AIDS.

In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the challenges faced by already overburdened education systems around the world, so it is now necessary to work together with teachers to protect the right to education and fit it into the new reality emerging in the pandemic.

According to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, to achieve universal primary education (UPE) alone, countries need to attract an additional 24 million teachers by 2030. The problem of teacher shortages is most acute in sub-Saharan Africa.

On the occasion of World Teachers' Day, UNESCO and its partners call on everyone to help spread awareness that October 5 is World Teachers' Day and that investing in teachers means investing in the future. The international community and governments must join forces to support teachers and promote quality learning around the world, especially in those countries with the largest number of out-of-school children.
