Celebration in honor of the icon of the Mother of God «Joy» for all who mourn (06/11)

The Holy Icon of the Mother of God «Joy» for all who mourn became known in 1688, when from her, during the reign of Tsars John Alekseevich and Peter Alekseevich, a miraculous healing of the Patriarch Job’s sister, Euphemia, who lived in Moscow on Ordynka and suffered from an incurable disease for a long time, took place.

One day, waking up early in the morning, she called the Savior and the Mother of God for help for a long time and diligently. After prayer, the patient heard a voice: «Euphemia! In the Temple of Transfiguration there is My image, called «Joy» All Who Sorrow. Call a priest to you with this image and pray: and you will receive healing from your illness».

Having come to her senses, the patient learned from her relatives that there really is an icon of the Mother of God «Joy» of All Who Sorrow in the Church of the Transfiguration on Ordynka in Moscow. She raised this icon to her house and received healing. This miraculous healing took place on October 24, and therefore the celebration of the icon was established on October 24 (November 6, new style).

In 1711, Grand Duchess Natalia Alekseevna, out of reverence for the icon « of All Who Sorrow Joy», made a list of it, took it with her to St. Petersburg and placed it in the home church of the Resurrection of Christ, which was at the princess’s palace. At the same time, the palace was built with a divine chapel with a special department for receiving babies, which was the first of its kind, before the founding of educational houses in St. Petersburg and Moscow.

According to another legend, in the palace church of Natalia Alekseevna during the reign of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, the miraculous icon of the Mother of God «Joy of All Who Sorrow was transferred from Moscow, then placed in a new temple, erected by the highest order in honor of the icon of the Mother of God »Joy« of All Who Sorrow.

Believers from different places, in great numbers, flock to this temple to worship the icon of the Mother of God with reverence: almost all the people of the royal family came to her for prayer, starting with Empress Catherine II.
