On the third Sunday of September, a professional holiday is celebrated for people who, through their noble work, preserve and enhance the forest resources of the planet and contribute to their rational use. Forest Workers Day dates back to the existence of the USSR.

On August 13, 1966, the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on the establishment of this holiday was adopted, and in 1980, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR № 3018-X «On holidays and memorable days», its celebration on the third Sunday of September was confirmed.

Today, Forest Workers Day is celebrated in Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine.
