Army Day in Armenia (28/01)

Every year on January 28, Armenia celebrates the professional holiday of all military personnel of the Armenian armed forces — Army Day (arm. ̆աանաի ր).

In 1991, by decision of the government of the Republic of Armenia, the State Defense Committee was created under the Council of Ministers, and on January 28, 1992, the historic decision «On the defense of the Republic of Armenia» was made, thereby announcing the creation of the Armenian National Army.

Currently, the date January 28 is a holiday and non-working day (since 2001), according to the Law of the President of the Republic «On holidays and memorable days of the Republic of Armenia».

If we talk about the history of the formation and development of the Armenian Army, then three main stages can be distinguished. At the first stage (from February 1989 to May 1992), during the period of aggravation of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, volunteer detachments ensured the security of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.

The second stage (from June 1992 to May 1994) is associated with the creation of a national Army in war conditions.

The third stage (from June 1994 to the present day) is called «army construction», when the main focus is on developing the military branches, strengthening the connection between the army and society and improving the living conditions of military personnel.

Traditionally, on January 28, the country's leadership and senior officials of the Armed Forces of the Republic congratulate all military personnel on their professional holiday, and the most distinguished are awarded state awards, military ranks and memorable gifts. Military screenings and parades are held everywhere, and programs and films on military topics are broadcast in the media.
