Day of Gas Workers of Azerbaijan (20/06)

Every year on June 20, Azerbaijan celebrates the Day of Gas Workers of the Republic.

The gas industry of Azerbaijan — is one of the oldest in the post-Soviet space; it was created in 1936. In connection with the 70th anniversary of the creation of the gas industry in the Republic of Azerbaijan, President of the Republic Ilham Aliyev, by his resolution of June 12, 2006, established a professional holiday for gas workers and set the date — as June 20.

Today Azerbaijan has large gas and oil reserves, and the gas industry is constantly developing. After all, the modern gas industry plays an important role in the economy of independent Azerbaijan.

Additional gas pipelines are being built through which gas is supplied to neighboring republics. New equipment is supplied to already exploited fields, new fields are explored and put into operation. Thanks to oil and gas production and high prices on the world market, the Republic's GDP grew by almost a third.

Most of the natural gas in Azerbaijan is extracted from plumes in the Caspian Sea, but there are large deposits on land, for example, Gyurgan-Zira, Garadag-Gobustan, etc. The Karadag gas and oil field, the industrial development of which began in 1957, has large natural gas resources. The Karadag — Baku, Karadag — Ganja — Akstafa — Tbilisi gas pipelines were built. Large reserves of natural gas are contained in the large offshore gas condensate field Shah Deniz, discovered in 1999. Operation of the first well at the field began in December 2006.

Oil and gas processing is concentrated in Baku and Sumgait. A diverse complex of petrochemical, gas and other industries has been created on the basis of oil and gas in Azerbaijan.

On this professional holiday, all workers and veterans of the gas industry of Azerbaijan receive congratulations, and the best workers are traditionally presented with state awards.
