International Animation Day (28/10)

International Animation Day or World Cartoon Day, which is celebrated annually on October 28, was established on the initiative of the French branch of The International Animated Film Association (ASIFA) in 2002 in honor of the 110th anniversary of the public presentation of the first animation technology.

On this significant day — October 28, 1892 — in Paris, artist and inventor Emile Reynaud called viewers to a new, hitherto unseen spectacle — «optical theater» (theatre optique). The talented inventor for the first time publicly demonstrated his praxinoscope device, which showed moving pictures. Now we would call this event the birth of the prototype of modern cartoons, and it is this date that is now considered the beginning of the era of animated cinema.

In many countries, festive events begin a few days before the designated date. On the eve of International Animation Day, professionals and fans of animated films from all over the world exchange programs for their films, hold festivals and organize premieres of bestsellers for a grateful audience waiting for this event for a whole year. Now similar cartoon screenings are taking place simultaneously in 104 countries around the world!

Animation (from the French animation — animation) or animation (from the Latin multiplicatio — multiplication) — is a type of cinema in which a film is created by sequentially filming the depicted phases of the movement of flat (graphic, pictorial) or three-dimensional objects. Animation is created using drawings, dolls and objects made of clay, sand, paper, and computer images.

Today, the technical capabilities of animation amaze — - two-dimensional animation (traditional and digital), three-dimensional animation, Flash, Stop Motion and VFX animation. Animation — is a powerful means of art, cultural expression and communication.

The first Russian animator was Alexander Shiryaev (1867-1941), choreographer of the Mariinsky Theater, who created the world's first domestic puppet cartoon in 1906, which depicts 12 dancing figures against the backdrop of motionless scenery. And in 1912, the premiere of the first Russian animated film – « Beautiful Lyukanida» took place, when the general public saw an animated film for the first time in history. In honor of this event, Russian Animation Day is celebrated.

Soviet graphic animation arose in 1924-1925. In 1924 alone, at the «Kultkino» studio, a small team of artists produced a number of animated films: «German affairs and affairs», «The story of one disappointment» (B. Savinkov), «Soviet toys» (dir. D. Vertov, animation by A. Bushkin and A. Ivanov), «Case in Tokyo», «Humoreski» (dir. D. Vertov, animation by A. Bushkin and A. Belyakov).

One of the first world-famous Soviet full-length animated films was «New Gulliver» by Alexandra Ptushko (1935).

In June 1936, the film studio «Soyuzmultfilm» was founded in Moscow. More than one generation of children grew up on good and smart stories animated on «Soyuzmultfilm», such as: «DoReMi», «Mowgly», «Winnie Pooh», «Little Dwarf», «Hippopotamus and Sunshine», «Burenka from Maslenkino», «Wolf and Seven Little Goats», «Kozlenok, who counted to ten», «Baby and Carlson», «Well, wait a minute!», «Bremen musicians», «Crocodile Gene», «Kitten Woof», «Simple quashino» and many others.

In 2006, veterans of the Soyuzmultfilm studio opened a unique project «Animation Museum». Initially, the museum did not have its own permanent premises, but was only a traveling exhibition that introduced visitors to the process of creating animated films, mainly created in the period 1960-1980 at the «Soyuzmultfilm» film studio.

Today the museum is located in Moscow, its collections include about 9,000 exhibits. Since 2008, it was located on the territory of the All-Russian Exhibition Center, but in 2015 the museum premises were closed for reconstruction. Currently, the main exhibition «Animation Museum» is located on the territory of the Izmailovo Kremlin.

International Animation Day – is a holiday not only for professionals who create cartoons, but also, of course, for adults and children. After all, everyone loves cartoons.
