Day of proclamation of the Republic of South Ossetia (20/09)

Every year on September 20, South Ossetia celebrates the public holiday — Day of the Proclamation of the Republic.

On September 20, 1990, the Council of People's Deputies of the South Ossetian Autonomous Region adopted a declaration of state sovereignty of the South Ossetian Soviet Democratic Republic. This document proclaimed the South Ossetian Autonomous Region as the «South Ossetian Soviet Democratic Republic (SUDR) within the USSR», and also established «state sovereignty as the supremacy, independence and completeness of state power within the boundaries of its territory, the legality of its laws, independence of the republic in external relations».

The declaration noted that «a natural and necessary condition for the further development of the South Ossetian Soviet Democratic Republic, as a form of statehood of the Ossetian people, is complete independence in resolving all political, socio-economic issues, with the exception of those that it voluntarily transfers to the jurisdiction of the USSR after its acceptance into its composition by the Supreme Soviet of the USSR».

Today is the Day of the Proclamation of the Republic for the residents of South Ossetia, a truly significant holiday. This date became the most important milestone in the history of the struggle of the people of South Ossetia for freedom. Since 2008, the Republic has been a partially recognized independent state.

The holiday is celebrated very widely in South Ossetia. On this day, wreaths and flowers are laid at the monuments of the victims and memorials, military parades, festive demonstrations, concerts, sports competitions are held, and all this, of course, is accompanied by mass folk festivals.
