The Day of the Air Defense Forces of Belarus was established by Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus No. 157 in March 1998, but it began to be celebrated back in Soviet times. The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR in 1975 decided: "for the great merits of the Air Defense Forces during the war years and for their performance of especially important tasks in peacetime, celebrate this day annually on the second Sunday of April."
It was in April 1975 that the most important government decrees on the organization of air defense were adopted. Military historians still continue to argue about what should be considered the date of birth of the Russian air defense forces, but it is known for sure that as soon as air attack means appeared, the question of air defense immediately arose.
As an independent branch of the armed forces, the air defense forces were created in the fall of 1941, when the 5th air defense division was formed in the city of Kuibyshev. After the Republic of Belarus gained state sovereignty and created its own Armed Forces in 1992, the Air Defense Forces were formed. At the end of 2001, at the final stage of the reform of the Armed Forces, a decision was made to form a single branch of the Armed Forces - the Air Force and the Air Defense Forces.
