Day of the State Flag of the Republic of Armenia (15/06)

Every year on June 15, Armenia celebrates the Day of the National Flag of the Republic.

On June 15, 2006, the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia adopted a special Law «On the State Flag of the Republic of Armenia», and therefore the date June 15 is an officially celebrated public holiday.

Flag of Armenia — state symbol of the Republic. It was adopted by the Supreme Council of the Republic of Armenia on August 24, 1990.

The flag is a rectangular panel (the ratio of the width of the flag to its length is 1:2) of three equal horizontal stripes: upper — red, middle — blue and lower — orange.

The red color symbolizes the Armenian Highlands, the constant struggle of the Armenian people for survival, Christian faith, independence and freedom of the country. The blue color symbolizes the desire of the Armenian people to live under a peaceful sky. The orange color symbolizes the creative talent and hard work of the Armenian people.

The flag was first proclaimed the official symbol of Armenia during the short period of independence (1918–1921). The independent Armenian state chose for its national flag the colors of the final period of the Rubenid dynasty (Kingdom of Cilicia) — red, blue and yellow. The choice of flowers was also significantly influenced by the materials of the report read in the National Assembly of the young republic by the outstanding Armenian philologist Stepan Malkhasyants.

Yellow was immediately replaced by orange, as the combination of red, blue and orange was thought to be more pleasing to visual perception. After Armenia gained independence, as a result of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, this flag again became the state symbol of the country.

On this day, many ceremonial and festive events take place throughout the Republic.
