The Bernese Carnival (Berner Fasnacht) is one of the largest events of its kind in Switzerland. It takes place annually in late February - early March, lasts three days and attracts many guests and participants. In recent years, this carnival has become the third largest and most popular carnival in the country, which is visited annually by more than 50 thousand people.
But in 2021, due to the coronavirus pandemic, festival events have been canceled.
According to historical documents, a similar carnival took place in Bern in the 15th century, but over time the tradition was gradually forgotten. The revival of the Bernese carnival and the tradition of its annual holding began only in 1982. Despite the relatively young age, the carnival quickly acquired its own traditions, became a popular and bright event not only in the life of the city, but throughout the country.
