Fathers' Day in Estonia (13/11)

Every year on the second Sunday of November, Estonia celebrates Fathers' Day (Isadepäev). The official history of this family holiday began in 1992, although, of course, many families previously organized holidays in honor of strong and beloved dads.

On the eve of the November holiday, thematic matinees are held in kindergartens, and concerts for parents are held in — schools. Children give dads homemade cards and gifts — are usually paper cut and painted ties or cars. On Father's Day, flags are hung in some cities.

Every year Fathers' Day in Estonia strengthens its traditions. For example, it has already become a tradition for law enforcement agencies to hold demonstration and educational performances as part of the charity free family holiday «Fathers' Day for all children», where on Sunday children, together with their fathers, can take part in various competitions and become more familiar with male professions.

Among the competition participants there are also children from orphanages, over whom police officers, rescuers, border guards or military personnel take patronage on this day.

On the second Sunday of November, Father's Day is also celebrated in Sweden and Finland.

As you know, the idea of organizing a holiday for dads (which is celebrated in many countries around the world on the third Sunday of June) was visited in 1909 by Mrs. Dodd from Washington. She wanted to express her gratitude to her father, and in his person —, to all the caring fathers of America involved in raising children. The father of the founder of the holiday was named William Smart, his wife died after giving birth to their sixth child, but his single father successfully raised a newborn and five other children. The virtuous William was a Civil War veteran and resided with the children on a farm.
