On August 30, the inhabitants of the Republic of Tatarstan celebrate the birth of their statehood - the Day of the Republic. On this day in 1990, the Supreme Council of the Republic adopted a declaration on the state sovereignty of the Tatar SSR.
The capital of the Republic is the city of Kazan.
The history of the Tatar people is complex and contradictory. At first, the Tatars were part of the state of Volga Bulgaria, and actively resisted the aggressive campaigns of the Mongols. After the emergence of the Kazan Khanate in the 15th century, the rivalry continued with the Muscovite state. In 1552, Ivan IV conquered Kazan and included it in the Russian kingdom.
