The first winter day of 2012 became another holiday and day off for the people of Kazakhstan. From this year on December 1, the country celebrates the Day of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In December 2011, at the plenary session of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the law “On making additions to the law of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan” was adopted. The Day of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan was established to celebrate and recognize the outstanding services of the first President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev to the Republic.
The historical background and basis for choosing the date of the holiday was the event that took place on December 1, 1991 - as a result of the first popular elections, Nursultan Abishevich Nazarbayev was re-elected to the post of President of the Kazakh SSR. He was the only candidate and won with 98.7% of the vote out of 88.2% of voters who voted.
