Day of Erkrap in Armenia (08/05)

On May 8, Armenia celebrates the Day of Yerkrapah (Armenian “Երկրապահի օր”), officially established in 2001.

Yerkrapah is the Union of Volunteers of the Republic of Armenia, established in 1993. Its emergence is connected with the military conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent territories in 1992-1994. The conflict was of an ethno-political nature, and its roots go back to the beginning of the 20th century, when the first Armenian-Azerbaijani clashes took place.

The role of the volunteers, who defended the territorial integrity of the young state with weapons in their hands, was very great. At a difficult moment for the country, the volunteers managed to take over the protection of the borders and defend the security of the people and the country.
