Darwin Day (12/02)

Darwin Day or International Day of Science and Humanism, dedicated to the birthday of the famous English naturalist, is celebrated annually on February 12.

Charles Darwin (1809-1882) —, the founder of the theory of natural selection, as well as the theory of evolution and the origin of man, was a prominent representative of 19th century science, and his theory was regarded as a scientific revolution during the scientist’s lifetime.

The ideas of establishing a holiday dedicated to Darwin, which gained popularity in US university circles in the 1990s, were implemented in 2001. Then it looked like two activists Amanda Chesworth and Robert Stevens registering a non-profit organization called the «Darwin Day Program». Subsequently, the International Darwin Day Foundation was created, promoting the dissemination of the ideas of Darwinism, as well as educational materials, and participating in the organizational processes for the celebration and events dedicated to this date.

From this moment on, Darwin Day is celebrated in many universities around the world. However, at first the celebrations were rather spontaneous, when events were organized in a particular educational institution in memory of the English scientist and his discoveries. Despite the fact that in recent years the theory of evolution of Ch. Darwin is often criticized, and the geography of the Day celebrations is expanding. The holiday has become truly international.

First of all, the idea of holding it was supported in scientific circles, since the Day is aimed not only at honoring Darwin’s discoveries, but also at popularizing science. Therefore, there is a second name — International Day of Science and Humanism. The connection between scientific discoveries and human values are obvious. There is no one without the other. Scientific discoveries, in which contradictions can also be identified, are nevertheless intended to serve man, ennoble him, making him wiser.

Darwin Day celebrations mainly take place in scientific and educational institutions, where exhibitions, seminars and lectures, conferences, and student competitions are organized by students and teachers. Often, public figures, representatives of humanitarian foundations, as well as journalists covering events in the press are involved in participation in festive events. The holiday is also celebrated in scientific circles of Russia, having the status of an unofficial holiday.
