On December 15, the Russian Armed Forces celebrate the Day of Formation of the Radio Engineering Troops of the Aerospace Forces of the Russian Federation.
This type of troops was created on December 15, 1951 by the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR and was originally called the Radio Engineering Troops of the VNOS (air surveillance, warning and communications) of the USSR Air Defense. Four years later, the abbreviation VNOS disappeared from the name of the military branch, and they began to be called the Radio-Technical Air Defense Forces of the USSR.
It is worth noting that, despite the official creation of a separate branch of the military in 1951, the functions of early detection of air targets, so necessary in war conditions, began to be performed during the First World War. Then, for this, special posts of "observation of the sky" were created, and during the years of the Great Patriotic War, VNOS posts generally played a huge role in timely warning of air danger.
