Day of the Hydrometeorological Service of the Armed Forces of Russia (22/12)

On December 21, 1995, by Order of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation No. 403, the date for celebrating the Day of the governing body of the Hydrometeorological Service of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation was set on December 22.

The choice of date was not accidental. The First World War made clear the need to control the weather conditions on the front lines for successful planning of military operations. The meteorological report for aviation operations was especially relevant.

Observation of weather conditions was carried out even before the outbreak of the First World War, however, the new conditions of hostilities and new means of warfare prompted the high command of the Russian army to create a separate service of its own. This decision was made on December 22, 1915 and formalized in the form of the Regulations on the Main Military Meteorological Directorate, established by the Decree of Emperor Nicholas II.
