International Day of Families (15/05)

International Day of Families, celebrated annually on May 15, was proclaimed by UN General Assembly resolution 47/237 in 1993.

The idea of establishing this holiday arose back in 1989, when, wanting to draw the attention of the public of different countries to family problems, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 1994 the International Year of the Family, and in 1993 adopted a resolution establishing today's holiday.

The establishment of this day aims to draw the attention of the public of countries to numerous family problems. And its implementation provides an opportunity to raise awareness of issues related to families and deepen knowledge of socio-economic and demographic processes affecting the situation of families.

According to the UN, when the fundamental rights of one family are violated —, the unity of the entire human family of which they are members is under threat.

Being one of the main institutions of society, the first stage of human socialization, the family develops and changes along with the outside world, reacting in its own way to the demands of the time, responding to social needs and shaping them itself.

The family, as a basic element of society, has been and remains the guardian of human values, culture and historical continuity of generations, a factor of stability and development. Thanks to the family, the state is strengthening and developing, and the well-being of the people is growing. At all times, the development of the country has been judged by the position of the family in society and the state in relation to it.

A person’s life begins with the family, and here he is formed as a citizen. Family — is a source of love, respect, solidarity and affection, something on which any civilized society is built, without which a person cannot exist. Family well-being — is the measure of the development and progress of the country.

It is also worrying that the number of homeless families in the world is growing. Thus, in a number of European countries, the number of homeless families constantly amounts to over 20% of the total number of homeless people.

Many countries around the world have developed entire demographic development strategies. And on this holiday itself, various educational, public and festive events — concerts are held; meetings of married couples with extensive experience in family life; charity events for guardianship families with children and for children from large and low-income families; trainings for young families; thematic workshops and conferences, radio and television programs, newspaper publications and programs dedicated to family topics, and other events.

By the way, every year a specific topic is chosen for the International Day of Families. Thus, over the years, the motto of the Day was: «Promoting social inclusion and intergenerational solidarity», «Ensuring a balance between work and family responsibilities for the benefit of families and society as a whole», «Addressing the problems of low-income families and problems of social exclusion», «The impact of migration on families around the world», «Families and people with disabilities», «The impact of HIV and AIDS on family well-being», «Families and aging — opportunities and challenges», «Creating families based on partnership», «Men — main? Gender equality and children's rights in modern families», «Family, healthy lifestyle and sustainable future», «Family, education and well-being», «Family and inclusive society», «Families and climate action», «Family and new technologies», «Families and urbanization», «Demographic trends and families» and others.

Let us remind you that the All-Russian Day of Family, Love and Fidelity is celebrated annually on July 8.
