Republic of Albania Day (11/01)

Republic of Albania Day (or Republic Proclamation Day) — is one of the memorable days in the country. Since 1946, it has been celebrated annually on January 11th.

In 1939, Albania was occupied by fascist Italy. The Albanian Constitution was abolished, a local fascist party was organized, and the Albanian army was incorporated into the Italian army in 1940.

Also in 1940, the formation of anti-fascist partisan parties began, led by regional leaders, representatives of the intelligentsia and religious figures. Separate groups of Albanian communists founded the Communist Party of Albania on November 8, 1941.

As the Italian army disintegrated, the Germans forced the occupation of cities and the coastal plain. By September 1943, Albania was occupied by Nazi German troops. But already in October 1944, under pressure from resistance units, the German retreat from the country began.

On November 29, 1944, the Albanian National Liberation Army expelled the last occupiers, and on January 11, 1946, the independent People's Republic of Albania was officially proclaimed.

Currently, this date is celebrated annually throughout the country with commemorative and solemn events. Also, according to tradition, Republic Day is accompanied by the raising of the national flag over all official institutions in Albania.
