International Museum Day (18/05)

Every year on May 18, museum workers from different countries celebrate their professional holiday - International Museum Day. And, of course, all those who are looking forward to the next trip to the local history museum of their city or a meeting with rare exhibits of the Hermitage or the Louvre are also involved in today's holiday.

It appeared on the calendar in 1977, when at a regular meeting of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) a proposal from a Russian organization to establish this cultural holiday was adopted. Since 1978, International Museum Day has been celebrated in more than 150 countries.

According to ICOM, museums are institutions in the service of society and its development. And ICOM itself, created in 1946, is a worldwide organization representing museums and museum professionals. Its activities are aimed at the protection and promotion of natural and cultural heritage - past and future, tangible and intangible. Today the members of this organization are 40 thousand members from more than 140 countries of the world.
