Day of restoration of the Lithuanian state (16/02)

On February 16, Lithuania celebrates an important public holiday — Day of Restoration of the Lithuanian State (Lithuanian). Lietuvos valstybės atkūrimo diena). On this day, national flags are hung throughout the country.

On February 16, 1918, at a meeting in Vilnius, the Council of Lithuania, vested with the powers of the people, proclaimed the restoration of the independent democratic Lithuanian state by signing the Act of Independence of Lithuania (Lith. Lietuvos nepriklausomybės aktas) or Act of February 16. According to this document, Lithuania was proclaimed an independent state, which should be governed on a democratic basis, with its capital in the city of Vilnius.

This event was important for the life of the country, which since the 16th century did not have complete independence, since at first it was part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and since the 18th century — was part of the Russian Empire. Therefore, this date is currently receiving attention at the state level.

Today, on the Day of Restoration of the Lithuanian State, a number of events dedicated to this significant date are taking place throughout the country. Among them are — speeches by top officials of the state to the people, a ceremony for presenting state awards at the Presidential Palace of the Republic of Lithuania, various concerts, holy masses in the country's churches and other celebrations and festive events.

Let us recall that on March 11, the Republic celebrates the Day of Restoration of Independence in honor of the event of 1990, when Lithuania declared its independence.
