The battle at Cape Sinop, which took place (18) November 30, 1853, became one of the major battles of the Crimean War, which began as a conflict between Russia and Turkey. In addition, it went down in history as the last major battle of the sailing fleets.
The Russian army and navy had a tangible advantage over the weakening Ottoman Empire, which contemporaries called the "sick man of Europe."
