Memorial Day for the Victims of Famine Mountains in Ukraine (26/11)

Every year on the fourth Saturday of November, Ukraine celebrates a mournful memorial date — Memorial Day for the victims of the famines.

The President of Ukraine, supporting the initiative of public organizations, the Ministry of Culture and Arts, the State Committee for Religious Affairs, the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting, decided to establish this Day of Remembrance in the republic. Events dedicated to this day also take place on the fourth Saturday of November.

Initially, by Decree of the President of Ukraine of November 26, 1998, the last Saturday of November was declared the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holodomor, then by Decree of October 31, 2000, this day was called the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holodomor and Political Repression. And in 2007 it was decided to change the name of the Day again, and by Presidential Decree № 431/2007 of May 21, 2007, it became known as « Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Famine ».

In 2002, when Ukraine celebrated the sad 70th anniversary of the mass deaths of the republic’s inhabitants from hunger in 1932-1933, during the events held, the leadership of the republic insisted on the international official recognition of this « holodomor » as genocide of the Ukrainian people. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine back in 2006 recognized the Holodomor as an act of genocide of the Ukrainian people.

According to some reports, the total number of hungry people reached 30 million people. In total, for 1921-1922, the population of the whole country, according to statistics P.N. Popova, decreased by 5.2 million people, according to other estimates — by 7 million people.

The famine of 1932-1933 was even more severe when drought destroyed the crops of almost all grain regions of the USSR. In « the second famine », according to official figures, about 9 million died, and according to unofficial — up to 13 million inhabitants of the Soviet Union.

Today on this memorable day, commemorative and mourning events and ceremonies at memorial complexes and iconic places are held in different cities of Ukraine. Also on this Day, thematic scientific, informational and cultural-art events, exhibitions, presentations, documents, photo and video materials are provided. At 16:00 on the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Homeland, a nationwide minute of silence passes.
