Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine ( Ukrainian. « Ukraine’s Evil Force Day » ) was established by the Verkhovna Rada in 1993. This national holiday is celebrated annually on December 6 — on the day of adoption in 1991 of the Law of Ukraine « On the Armed Forces of Ukraine ».
Having proclaimed independence in 1991, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a number of legislative acts relating to the military field in a short time. The main documents — The concept of defense and construction of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the resolution « On the Defense Council of Ukraine », the laws of Ukraine « On the defense of Ukraine », The military doctrine of Ukraine and the aforementioned law « On the Armed Forces of Ukraine » — determined the vector of development of the Armed Forces of the state for all subsequent years.
Attention to the military sphere of the leadership of independent Ukraine was understandable — the country inherited from the USSR one of the most powerful troop groups in Europe, equipped with nuclear weapons and modern weapons and military equipment. As for the nuclear equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a nuclear disarmament program was carried out in the first half of the 1990s.
Currently, the Armed Forces of Ukraine consist of ground forces, air and naval forces and other units. Ground forces are most numerous and include mechanized and tank troops, highly mobile landing troops, missile troops and artillery, as well as army aviation and air defense forces.
On the day of the holiday, the President of the country traditionally speaks with a welcoming speech on the occasion of the celebration, congratulates the officers and rank and file, as well as veterans of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
