Buddha Purnima (16/05)

Today, India celebrates the most sacred holiday of the Buddhist calendar - the Birthday of Buddha (Buddha Purnima), the founder of Buddhism. In India, it falls on the day of the full moon in late April - May, and this is an officially approved day of rest in the country.

According to legend, Buddha was born on this day in 623 BC, on the same day he attained enlightenment and in 543 BC. On the same day he died, having reached full nirvana. Thus, all three major events in the life of the Buddha are celebrated simultaneously.

Shakyamuni Buddha, also known as Siddhartha (proper name) and as Gautama (family name). He was the son of Shuddhodana from the Gautam family, the Shakyas (hence Shakyamuni - “a hermit from the Shakya tribe”). Born in the village of Lumbini (now the territory of Nepal). After the birth of his son, at the age of 29, Prince Siddhartha left secular life and went in search of Truth. Asceticism and asceticism did not lead him to the goal. Then he chooses the "Middle Way".
