Day of the sign language interpreter in Russia (31/10)

Day of the sign language interpreter, celebrated in Russia annually on October 31, was established in January 2003 at the initiative of the Central Board of the All-Russian Society of the Deaf in order to draw society's attention to the problems of the deaf.

In total, about 900 sign language interpreters work in the Russian Federation, each of which accounts for up to 100,000 deaf people. Every day, the sign language interpreter receives applications. An interpreter is needed in court, police, tax office, social protection, at a doctor's appointment...

Professional sign language interpreters are mostly children of deaf parents who grew up in the so-called "deaf" environment. You can get an education in this specialty at interregional training centers in a number of Russian cities.
