Kuwait Liberation Day (26/02)

Liberation Day in Kuwait is celebrated annually in the country on February 26 in honor of the liberation of Kuwait during the military operation that took place on February 24—28, 1991.

The operation to liberate Kuwait was part of the Persian Gulf War, which lasted almost 7 months (August 2, 1990 — February 28, 1991), between Iraq and Kuwait. Kuwait was supported by the countries of the — Coalition USA, Great Britain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and others.

The war took place in the territories of Kuwait, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Operation «Desert Storm began on January 17, 1991 at 03.00 Baghdad time and lasted 41 days. Its purpose was determined by UN Security Council Resolution 678 of November 29, 1990 and was to implement the Security Council decisions on the unconditional withdrawal of Iraq from Kuwait.

On February 26, 1991, the Coalition's multinational force finally liberated the country, which had been under Iraqi occupation for seven months. The war ended in a Coalition victory and the removal of Iraqi military forces from the country. But this victory also had the other side — of Iraq's thousands of casualties, losses of military equipment on both sides and significant destruction of Iraqi and Kuwaiti cities.

Every year, Kuwait Liberation Day is celebrated with rallies and meetings. However, this is largely a day of remembrance for those killed for the freedom of Kuwait, when ceremonial and commemorative events are held throughout the country with the laying of flowers at memorials and graves of the victims.
