Limba Noastre — National Language Day in the Republic of Moldova (31/08)

Every year on the last summer day, August 31, Moldova celebrates the traditional holiday — National Language Day — Limba Noastra.

«Limba noastre» means — «our language» or «mother tongue», and the reason for establishing the holiday was the adoption of the Law on giving the Moldovan language the status of the state language of August 31, 1989. And since then this day has been a national holiday.

Exhibitions, festivals and other events held as part of the holiday by the Department of Interethnic Relations are timed to coincide with the holiday. During the day, amateur artists perform at stationary and improvised concert venues in different sectors of the capital, and in the evening a concert with the participation of popular masters of Moldovan and Romanian pop music is held on the Great National Assembly Square.

Also on this day you can visit many museums, exhibitions and galleries for free, as holiday discounts apply and some government agencies hold open days.

Another event dedicated to the holiday deserves special mention. A memorial service is being held at the city's Central Cemetery for untimely departed figures of Moldovan culture who have made a special contribution to the development of their native language and national literature.

Tribute to the grateful memory is also paid to the classic of national poetry Alexei Mateevich — to the author of the poem «Limba noastre», the text of which has become the anthem of independent Moldova since 1994.

The main feature of the anthem Limba noastră, written in a romantic style, — is the national language, which encourages people to reconsider the use of their native language.
