Miner's Day (28/08)

On the last Sunday of August, courageous people celebrate their professional holiday, whose hard work — is the key to successful economic development. For more than half a century, Russia and other countries — former Soviet republics — have celebrated Miner's Day, paying tribute to the dedicated work of a glorious army of thousands of miners.

The coal mining industry has been and remains one of the key sectors of the Russian economy, providing fuel to enterprises and the population. The quantity and quality of the extracted raw materials determines whether there will be heat in the apartments of residents not only of this area, but of the entire country in the coming winter.

Miner's Day was officially approved in the USSR at the suggestion of the ministers of the coal industry A.F. Zasyadko and D.G. Onika September 10, 1947. Miner's Day was first celebrated on August 29, 1948.

A name that is probably immediately remembered in a conversation about miners — is the name of Alexei Stakhanov. On August 31, 1935, miner Alexey Stakhanov, thanks to special working conditions, set a record: in 5 hours 35 minutes he produced 102 tons of coal — 14 norms. From that time on, the words «stakhanovite», «stakhanov movement», «work in Stakhanov style» went down in history.

For coal mining cities and regions, Miner's Day is an important holiday and is widely celebrated with open-air concerts and folk festivals.

But today's date — is not only a holiday, on this day they also remember those who gave their lives to mining. Therefore, festive events traditionally begin with laying flowers at the monuments to fallen miners.

Today Miner's Day is celebrated by coal miners in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Ukraine.
