Day of Proclamation of the Republic of Brazil (15/11)

Every year on November 15 in Brazil there is a holiday day off — Day of the Proclamation of the Republic (Dia da Proclamação da República).

On November 15, 1889, Emperor Don Pedro II was deposed by the military, and Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca proclaimed the Republic — of the United States of Brazil (a República dos Estados Unidos do Brasil).

The transition from monarchy to republic was relatively calm and bloodless. The imperial family was expelled from the country.

The Republic adopted a federal system of government. The provinces were converted into states. The parliamentary form was replaced by a presidential system of government. And the date is celebrated in the country as a public holiday, to which many events are timed: parades, concerts, mass celebrations and fireworks.
