The Day of Physical Culture and Sports of Ukraine (Ukr. Day of Physical Culture and Sports) is celebrated in the country annually on the second Saturday of September on the basis of Presidential Decree No. 340/94 of June 29, 1994. Its main goal is to involve the population of Ukraine in sports and physical education, as well as to promote an active healthy lifestyle.
European sports such as football and wrestling began to spread here from the end of the 19th century. Many victories were won by Ukrainian athletes, speaking in various sports as part of the USSR national teams. The legends of Ukrainian sports are: jumper Sergei Bubka, football players Oleg Blokhin and Igor Belanov, who were awarded the Golden Ball as the best football players in Europe.
In total, more than four hundred Olympic medals were won by Ukrainian athletes. And today, the new generation continues to successfully perform on the world sports arenas.
On the holiday itself, traditionally in many settlements of Ukraine, sports days, competitions, marathons and other mass sports events are held, the winners of which are awarded certificates and valuable gifts. In Ukrainian educational institutions, also on this day, or on the eve, all kinds of competitions and competitions in physical culture and sports are organized. Another tradition of this holiday is honoring the veterans of Ukrainian sports.
