Day of the Prosecutor's Office of Armenia (01/07)

Every year on July 1, Armenia celebrates the professional holiday — Prosecutor's Day, established by the Decision of the Government of the Republic of March 7, 2003, number 207-N.

In Armenia, the prosecutorial service began to operate on December 6, 1918, when the Council of the First Republic of Armenia adopted Law «On the application of the laws of the former Russian Empire» on the territory of Armenia. This law, in particular, determined that the laws of the former Russian Empire were temporarily in force on the territory of the Republic of Armenia, with additions and changes from the Provisional Government, the Transcaucasian Commissariat, the Seimas and the Council of Armenia. On the same day, the Council of Armenia also adopted a law on the application of the judicial system of the Russian Empire. The prosecutor's office operated under the judicial system.

In Armenia, the prosecutor's office, as a separate unit, was first organized after the approval of the Soviet system. Following the example of Soviet Russia, throughout Armenia, the approval of a unified legality and the organization of the fight against crime were entrusted to the prosecutor's office of the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, which was created on July 22, 1922. However, as a separate structure it had a very short life. In December 1922, with the formation of the Soviet Union, among other allied state bodies, the Prosecutor's Office of the Supreme Court of the USSR was also founded, and the prosecutor's office of the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic began to report to a division of this body in Soviet Armenia.

The Constitution of Soviet Armenia, adopted in 1937, significantly increased the role and importance of prosecutorial supervision and clarified the structure of the prosecutor's office as a single centralized system that operated under the head of the USSR Prosecutor. The Constitution of the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic defined: the highest supervision over the correct application of laws on the territory of the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic by institutions subordinate to the people's commissariats of the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, as well as individual officials and citizens, is carried out both directly by the Prosecutor of the USSR and by the prosecutor of the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.

On September 21, 1991, having declared independence, the Supreme Council of the Third Republic of Armenia announced that former legislative and other acts would be in force in the country to such an extent that they do not contradict the ideals of the Declaration of Independence. The USSR Law «On the Prosecutor's Office» was also included among the acts that did not contradict the principles, and the prosecutorial authorities of the independent Republic of Armenia, before the adoption of the new law, were guided in their activities by this law.

One of the first steps towards the creation of national legislation regulating the activities of the prosecutor's office was that on October 5, 1995, the Military Prosecutor's Office was created within the structure of the Prosecutor's Office of Armenia, as a separate unit.

On July 5, 1995, the first Constitution of the Republic of Armenia was adopted, Article 103 of which defines the functions and tasks of the prosecutor's office. The National Law on the Prosecutor's Office was adopted on July 1, 1998, and came into force on January 12, 1999. At the beginning of 1999, in accordance with Law «On the Prosecutor's Office», new structural units of the Prosecutor's Office of Armenia were formed: the Prosecutor General's Office with its departments and departments, regional prosecutors' offices, the city of Yerevan, communities of the city of Yerevan and military prosecutors' offices of garrisons.

Today, on their professional holiday, all employees of the prosecutor's office receive congratulations from management and friends, and the most distinguished employees are awarded state awards and memorable gifts.
