Day of declaration of independence of Montenegro (03/06)

On June 3, Montenegro celebrates the public holiday —, the Day of Declaration of Independence or the Day of Declaration of Montenegro as a State. Along with Independence Day, celebrated in the country on May 21, this national holiday is also popular and is accompanied by various ceremonial and entertainment events.

On June 3, 2006, the Parliament of Montenegro, a former federal republic within Yugoslavia, announced the independence of Montenegro and its withdrawal from the union with Serbia. This announcement is based on the results of a referendum on May 21, 2006, in which 55.5% of Montenegrin voters were in favor of independence.

Parliament also adopted a resolution on the Constitution of the new sovereign state, which declares Montenegro an independent, democratic and civil state. The desire to quickly join the European Union and NATO has become one of the main reasons for declaring independence.

In mid-June, Montenegro was recognized by most countries in the world and international organizations. On June 28, Montenegro became the 192nd member of the UN.

Although Serbian authorities did not take part in the celebrations in Montenegro, Serbian President Boris Tadic sent a telegram wishing «Peace, stability and prosperity».

Montenegro — is the last federal republic of Yugoslavia to become a sovereign state. Until the early 90s of the 20th century, Yugoslavia consisted of six republics: Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Montenegro. Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Macedonia seceded from Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. The collapse of Yugoslavia was accompanied by civil war.
