Unlike many countries - the former republics of the Soviet Union - in the schools of Azerbaijan, the new academic year begins on September 15, not September 1. And this day is an important holiday for the whole country - the Day of Knowledge.
It was established by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev dated August 21, 2004. This document also spoke about the transition of general education schools to a five-day working week and that classes in all educational institutions of the Republic of Azerbaijan begin on Knowledge Day - September 15th.
All this was done "in order to improve the existing mode of operation in the educational institutions of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in connection with the creation of an effective system of activities that would improve the quality of education in these educational institutions." The education system in the country includes pre-school education, general (secondary) education, professional (secondary specialized and higher) education, postgraduate training, master's and doctoral studies.
