Day of National Salvation of the Azerbaijani People (15/06)

Day of National Salvation of the Azerbaijani People (Azerbaijan). Azərbaycan xalqının milli qurtuluş günü was established in the Republic due to the fact that on June 15, 1993, Heydar Aliyev (1923-2003) returned to the leadership of the country and was elected Chairman of the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan. And in June 1997, the Milli Majlis of the Republic (Parliament of Azerbaijan) declared this day a public holiday.

In Azerbaijan, after the establishment of independence in 1991, there was a crisis of power. In the young Republic of Azerbaijan, there was a struggle for leadership of the country between individuals and groups. After coming to power on May 14, 1992, the Popular Front showed a complete inability to govern the country from the first day of its activities. There was chaos in all spheres of public life of the state, the population was on the verge of impoverishment, and, as a result, social tension began to increase.

In the summer of 1993, a real threat of civil war arose in Azerbaijan. Then the Popular Front invited the outstanding leader of Azerbaijan — Heydar Aliyev from Nakhchivan, who accepted invitations from the people and leadership of the country and arrived in Baku on June 9, and on June 15 was elected chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

In a very short time, Aliyev, with his competent actions as head of the Republic, was able to relieve social tension and prevent a civil war in Azerbaijan. He also began the process of building an independent and strong state in accordance with international norms and principles, and created conditions for positive changes in the socio-political, social, economic, scientific and cultural life of the country.

Thus, the date June 15 went down in the history of the country as the Day of National Salvation of the Azerbaijani People. In honor of this holiday, many ceremonial and public events, festive concerts and folk festivals are held throughout the country.
