Day of the creation of units to combat organized crime in Russia (15/11)

On November 15, 1988, the 6th Directorate of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs was organized by order of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs. Today, this date is considered the Day of the Creation of Organized Crime Units in Russia.

In February 1991, the 6th Directorate was transformed into the Main Directorate for Combating the Most Dangerous Crimes, Organized Crime, Corruption and Drug Trafficking. A year later, the Main Directorate for Organized Crime (GUOP) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia was created. In 1999-2004 - the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime, since 2004 - the Department for Combating Organized Crime and Terrorism of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, which in 2008, as a result of reforms in the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, was transformed into the Main Directorate for Combating Extremism of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Affairs of the Russian Federation (GUPE MIA of Russia).

Currently, the GUPE of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation is an independent structural unit of the police, it is part of the central apparatus of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, being the main operational unit of the Ministry in the field of countering extremist activity and terrorism. Within its competence, this Department performs the functions of developing and implementing state policy and regulatory legal regulation, as well as law enforcement powers in the field of countering extremist activity and terrorism.
