Constitution Day of Lithuania (25/10)

Every year on October 25, Lithuania celebrates the public holiday — Constitution Day (lit. Konstitucijos diena).

The current Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania was adopted by referendum on 25 October 1992. This is the basic law of the Republic of Lithuania, which includes 14 chapters (154 articles), as well as the preamble and «Final provisions».

The structure of the Constitution shows the influence of earlier constitutional acts of Lithuania. Along with the traditional chapters on parliament, president, government, judicial system, local self-government for most Constitutions, the Constitution of Lithuania has a chapter on finance and budget, which first appeared in the Constitution of 1922 in Lithuania.

The text of the Constitution is distinguished not only by clarity and logical consistency of presentation, but also by a high level and detailed elaboration of specific regulatory decisions.

Until March 11, 1990, the Constitution of the USSR of 1977 and the Constitution of the Lithuanian SSR of 1978 were in force on the territory of Lithuania. The Supreme Council of the Lithuanian SSR, by laws adopted on March 11, 1990, repealed the Soviet constitutions, renewed the 1938 constitution and, in order to harmonize the provisions of the latter with the current factual situation, adopted the Provisional Basic Law of the Republic of Lithuania.
