Sunny Coffee Day in Iceland (27/01)

Iceland has such an unusual holiday as Sunny Coffee Day. In winter, many areas of this country plunge into pitch darkness not so much due to the country’s proximity to the Arctic Circle, but due to the mountainous terrain. Therefore, in many valleys, the appearance of the first rays of the sun from behind the mountain was always perceived as a prelude to the coming spring, as its golden banner.

Peasants from the surrounding estates gathered in a designated place, trying to bake pancakes, have time to brew and drink coffee until the capricious sun disappeared behind the peaks again. The fun also continued after sunset and resumed with the new appearance of the sun, until its light again became commonplace.

Despite Iceland's remoteness from the coffee-producing powers, the hot, invigorating drink, appearing in 1772, immediately won the hearts of Icelanders. In addition to coffee, only tobacco and alcohol were in high demand, regardless of the population’s ability to provide themselves with essential products.

Coffee was precisely that outlet, that minimal luxury for the exhausted hungry peasant, which allowed him not only to enjoy the drink, but also to rejoice with his neighbors at the long-awaited appearance of the sun!

The date of celebration, of course, depends on the appearance of the sun in a particular area, however, in large populated areas it is customary to average the date and record it.

Today, for example, there is a reason to pick up a cup of tea or other favorite drink for the residents of Reykjavik who have waited for their sun, which we will do with pleasure, marking the morning with a cup: invigorating Romanian-flavored coffee in Turkish or a cup of delicious latte coffee

Good morning and sunny days to you!
