Carnival in Portugal (26/02)

On this day begins the period of carnival cascades throughout Portugal. Carnivals take place throughout the country, usually starting a few days before Lent and gaining momentum as Fat Tuesday — approaches the last holiday.

What and when — is scheduled by day, and the fun fills you tightly all the time. So, Sunday and Tuesday, according to tradition, are — days of the sambadrome with fiery rhythms and rapid dances like flames. Monday (pink Monday) — procession of jesters.

Carnivals capture the entire country in a noisy stream, but Lisbon, Madeira, Torres Vedras, Nazare, Ovar, where the most colorful processions take place, are especially expressive these days.

On Carnival Saturday, Figueira performs, according to local custom, the original action «Sawing the old vault».

And the residents of the town of Loule in the Algarve have this tradition: after the carnival, they change into witch costumes and go to dinner in their circle. Moreover, the male half of the population is not allowed there.
